Infant Nutrition and Feeding

In keeping with All-Things-New-Mom, today I’d like to touch on infant nutrition and feeding.  In fact, fellow mom blogger Katie Moore is here today, to impart her research and knowledge about the importance of proper nutrition for infants.  Thank you, Katie for taking time out of your busy schedule to share this information with my readers. Take it away…

Nutritional Requirements of Infants

Babies need many of the same nutrients in vitamin and mineral form that adults do. These include protein, Vitamins A, D, E, K, C, Thiamine and more. The good news is that a mother’s breast milk or infant formula will provide her baby with these nutritional needs. Feeding is of course essential to baby’s health but is also important for bonding with baby.


Breastfeeding is recommended for your baby’s first six months of life. Your infant will get most of the nutrients he or she needs and will also receive your natural immunities. Later, when adding solid foods, you can continue to breastfeed for a while longer, if you wish. If you are breastfeeding your baby, your pediatrician will probably recommend Vitamin D drops for your infant to supplement your breast milk. Sometimes breast milk does not provide enough of this important vitamin that helps your infant to absorb calcium and phosphorous.

Bottle Feeding:

You should not feel guilty if you choose not to breast feed your baby or are unable to. Your baby will not know the difference. Your baby’s pediatrician will recommend various types of baby formula for you to choose from. Some babies have trouble tolerating a cow-milk formula base. If this is the case with your baby, you can switch to a soy formula. As long as you prepare your infant’s formula as directed, your baby will be getting all the necessary nutrients.

Heating Up Formula or Expressed Breast Milk:

You should not heat up formula or expressed breast milk in a microwave. This is because the fluid in the bottles heats unevenly, creating hot pockets and this is dangerous for the baby. Formula or breast milk heated in a microwave loses much of its nutrition.

Heat your baby’s bottles by placing a few inches of water in a small pan on the stove. Then heat the water until it is hot, but not boiling. Turn off the stove and let the bottle sit in the water for a minute. Take the bottle out of the pan, shake it and test a drop of the formula or breast milk on your wrist.

You can also heat a baby’s bottle by holding it under the hot water tap until it is warm. It is not necessary to heat up formula, but expressed breast milk should be warmed.

Feeding Frequency:

Breast fed babies need to eat more often than bottle-fed babies. Even if he or she is sleeping, a baby should not go more than three hours without nursing.

Nurturing Your New Child:

Nurturing and bonding with baby began before birth—bonding begins in the womb when a baby can hear a mother’s voice and heartbeat. Mother’s begin nurturing by caring for their bodies with a healthy diet and moderate exercise—mother’s also nurture by preparing for a healthy delivery and making decisions on options like delivery methods, pain management, umbilical cord blood banking, and immunizations. How to feed a baby is another important decision. Whether you breast or bottle-feed your little one, nursing time is very special to both of you. It is an important bonding exercise where your baby, through touch, smell and taste, gets to know who Mommy is.

Though it doesn’t feel like it at the time, your time of nursing your infant is short. You will look back someday and remember with fondness your time cuddling and feeding your newborn baby.
